Stress Management

Stress management deals with a wide range of techniques and psychotherapies to control individual stress levels, especially in severe conditions by improving everyday functioning.

Effects of stress

  • Stress shows negative effects on the physical & psychological well being of an individual.

  • It also shows a positive effect on personality that includes motivation & ability to deal with stressful situations.

Causes of Stress

Things that cause stress are called stressors. These are of three types - physical, emotional,  social 

  • Physical stressors affect the physical well being of the individual. These include accidents, hunger, lack of sleep, Sickness.

  • Emotional stressors affect both physical and emotional well being of an individual. These mainly include worry, fear,  grief, depression, anger.

  • Social stressors arise from relationships with other people - peers,  family, teachers,employees etc. 

Stress related illness 

Stress is not only related to bad health but also with other disease conditions, that include:

  • Depression 

  • Ulcers 

  • Cardiovascular diseases

  • Immune system diseases

  • Asthma 

  • Cancer 

  • Memory loss 

  • Migraines

  • Skin disorders 

Stress management techniques 

Individual Stress is managed by reducing or avoiding strategies, techniques or tools to manage themselves from stress. These include:

  • Lifestyle changes

  • Exercise 

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy 

  • Relaxation methods 

Lifestyle changes include health essentials to any stress-reduction program. These include-

  • By consuming diet which is rich in whole grain,  fruits, & vegetables 

  • Avoid taking alcohol 

  • Avoid excessive caffeine 

  • Avoid consumption of tobacco 

Exercise is one of the techniques used as a combination with effective distraction from stressful events. It helps to maintain stress on Blood pressure and heart. 

  • Increases happiness levels 

  • Improves memory 

  • Increases self-confidence 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - one of the most effective methods to reduce stress. A typical CBT approach includes identifying typical sources of stress reforming priorities, changing one's response to stress & by finding methods for managing and reducing stress.

4A's of Stress management include:

  • Avoid 

  • Alter 

  • Adapt 

  • Accept 

Relaxation methods refers to ways to promote the natural unwinding of the stress response.

  • Deep Breathing Exercise

  • Muscle Relaxation techniques 

  • Meditation 

  • Massage therapy 

  • Visualization and imagery
