Importance of critical thinking

What is critical thinking? 
Critical thinking includes the ability to engage in reflective & independent thinking. It is the ability to think clearly and rationally about what to do? or what to believe?

Some of the features related to critical thinking includes:

# To understand the connections between the ideas. 

# Identify, construct and evaluate arguments.

# To identify the relevance and importance of ideas.

# To detect inconsistent and common mistakes in reasoning

# To solve problems systematically 

# To justify one's own beliefs & values

Critical thinking is not about knowing so much information. A person should be able to reduce the consequences from what they know, and how to make the use of information to solve problems, and to seek relevant sources of information.

And a person who has good memory and who knows a lot of facts, may not be good at critical thinking. Critical thinking should not be confused with arguments or being critical to other people. Indeed it helps us to acquire knowledge, improve our theories, & strengthen arguments. It can also be used to get exposure to bad reasoning, and play an important role in cooperative reasoning & constructive tasks. One can use critical thinking to enhance work processes and improve social institutions like school, university, community, clubs, etc. 

Importance of critical thinking:

  • Critical thinking promotes creativity: Critical thinking plays a crucial role in evaluating new ideas, selecting the best ones and modifying them if necessary. A problem not only involves new ideas, but also creative solutions to solve it. It helps in generating new ideas that are being relevant to the task at hand.

  • Critical thinking enhance language & presentation skills: It helps in thinking clearly and systematically that can improve the way we express our ideas. In the learning process to analyse the logical structure of texts, critical thinking also improves comprehension abilities.

  • Critical thinking is crucial for self-reflection: For a meaningful life and to structure our lives accordingly, we need to justify and reflect on our values and decisions. It provides the tools for this process of self-evaluation.

  • Good critical thinking acts as a foundation for science and democracy: Critical thinking is used in experimentation and theory confirmation for science. For liberal democracy citizens think critically about social issues to inform their judgments about proper governance and to overcome biases and prejudice for proper functioning. 

  • Critical thinking for a new knowledge economy:  To drive the global knowledge economy for information and technology, one has to be able to deal with changes quickly and effectively. The new economy places increasing demands on flexible intellectual skills, and the ability to analyse information and integrate diverse sources of knowledge in solving such problems. Good critical thinking helps such thinking skills are very important in the fast-changing at the workplace.

Critical thinkers are able to do the following things:

• Be open minded about new ideas.

• Are intellectually independent.

• Know when there is a need for more information about something.

• Ask questions.

• Base their judgments on evidence.

• Look for connections between subjects.

• Know the difference between a conclusion that might be true and one that must be true.

• Analyze and understand concepts, information, and behavior.

• Break things down and separate fact from opinion.

• Question everything that doesn’t make sense.

• Try to avoid common mistakes in reasoning.
